It can seem trivial but to hunt truffles we need a reliable friend, a dog. In fact, according to Italian law, truffle hunting is possible with dogs only and not with pigs, as the French do.<\/p>\n

Pigs are bulky, have long teeth ruining plant roots. In addition, their training and getting them obedient is difficult.<\/p>\n

On the contrary, dogs have a high ability to obedience and learning, so they are perfect for our activity.<\/p>\n

The dog\u2019s name is very important; it must be short and come first before our every order. In addition, the best breed must be chosen \u2026<\/p>\n

All dogs and breeds can be trained to hunt truffles, above all half-breeds.<\/p>\n

However choice is not simple, in fact the place and time of hunting must be analyzed.<\/p>\n

Considering that in Piedmont truffle hunting in the night is allowed, winter is very cold and above all white truffls are searched, which are found in depth, a dog breed for cold weather, with clear fur easily visible in the night and high sense of smell must be chosen. We must also consider whether a dog is for professional purposes and if hunting takes place every day or only at the weekend.<\/p>\n

In case of frequent hunting, a suitable dog must be chosen, deriving from a bloodline \u201cfor work\u201d with a body appropriate for long lasting searching and in all circumstances.
Dogs with shaven hair such as Pointers are not suited to our climate, as they lose weight due to cold temperatures, show ribs and tend to go back to the car. All hunting dog crossbreeds like Bracco\/Pointer Springer\/Pointer, Drathaar\/Bracco, Drathaar\/Pointer are very suitable however.<\/p>\n

Hunting dog breeds could be suitable too but often tend to have a high hunting instinct.<\/p>\n

According to my experience, the best breed adapting itself to all circumstances is Lagotto Romagnolo. It is the only one approved as a truffle hunting dog by ENCI (Italian Kennel Club).<\/p>\n

The Lagotto is above all suitable for beginners as it is extremely intelligent. In few training days it can find truffles, it has not got a hunting instinct and its thick fur is not sensitive to cold temperatures. However, it must often be shaven in spring and summer so that it does not suffer from heat and, in addition, weed and foxtail cannot stick to its coat.<\/p>\n

In conclusion, hunting dogs require a lot of resolve, they need strict rules and therefore I suggest them only to skilled truffle hunters, while the Lagotto is recommended to everyone.<\/p>\n

In order to train a puppy to truffle hunt, it is necessary to let the dog gradually connect the hunting with playing, without expecting immediate results. Such training must occur little by little, with patience and trying to repeat the different below mentioned steps until the dog understands each single exercise.<\/p>\n

Under the premise that the dog must consider such work as a game, it has to be as focused as possible and must be constantly followed. Exercises must be short, so each exercise can be repeated several times over the day but for a short time (5 to 15 minutes approximately), because the dog is very young and its attention\/concentration levels are limited. Insisting on longer exercise is not suggested because the dog considers it a game and if it gets bored and we oblige it to continue, we will have the opposite effect so it will not want to repeat the exercise again.<\/p>\n

Day after day the dog will respond to orders increasingly better and exercises as well as duration can become gradually longer. It is complicated to specify time for dog training, as concentration level depends on both dog character and the trainer\u2019s ability to involve its dog.<\/p>\n

I have had a passion for dog training for several years and I must say that each dog has its distinctive trait and must be treated in a different way. The Lagotto must be treated with a lot of kindness. If it has not got a bloodline for truffle or work, it will be difficult to let it hunt. In fact, during the last few years I have been noticing that many people arrange profit-making broods without considering important factors. For example, they breed the Lagotto dogs with dysplasia, low inclination to work and learning crossbreeds\u2026 they will become perfect pet dogs but very bad truffle hunting dogs.<\/p>\n

For many years I\u2019ve been selecting dogs for work, both crossbreeds and Lagotto dogs, and on average more than 70% out of 7\/8 puppies are already strong when they\u2019re 3 months old, if training is diligent, dedicated to truffle hunting and there\u2019s little distraction.
Before training, we usually let the dog undergo simple tests in order to understand it has an inclination for truffle hunting.<\/p>\n

During the first test we investigate whether it likes the taste of truffles or not, then we will try to make it bring a truffle-scented cloth back. Another significant test consists in evaluating whether the dog is curious, or attentive to our actions\u2026 If the dog is shy, fearful, tends to hide, doesn\u2019t eat truffles, is not interested in us nor in truffle-scented cloth, surely it is a good dog but as pet\u2026<\/p>\n

Not necessarily, could such a kind of dog never become a truffle hunting dog but before training it surely needs long behavior training in order to strengthen its character to trust in human beings and tackle its fears.<\/p>\n

\u201cFin da bambino seguivo mio nonno che oltre ad essere cacciatore, era triful\u00e8 come si dice in torinese, tartufaio. Sembrer\u00e0 banale ma per andare a tartufi abbiamo bisogno di un amico fidato, un cane, infatti secondo la legge italiana, \u00e8 possibile praticare la ricerca solamente con i cani e non con i maiali come fanno i nostri cugini francesi. Il maiale infatti, \u00e8 un animale ingombrante da trasportare, possiede lunghi denti che rovinano le radici delle piante, oltre alla difficolt\u00e0 nell\u2019addestramento all\u2019obbedienza. Il cane, avendo una enorme capacit\u00e0 di obbedienza e di apprendimento di quello che gli viene insegnato \u00e8 la scelta perfetta per praticare la nostra attivit\u00e0. Molto importante sar\u00e0 il nome, dovr\u00e0 essere corto e preceder\u00e0 ogni comando che gli daremo, oltre a questo, dovremmo scegliere la razza migliore.<\/p>\r\n

Tutti i cani e tutte le razze sono addestrabili alla ricerca del tartufo, soprattutto i meticci. La scelta non \u00e8 comunque cos\u00ec semplice, infatti dobbiamo analizzare dove e quando viene fatta la ricerca. In Piemonte oltre ad essere permessa la ricerca notturna, troviamo un inverno molto rigido, la ricerca viene fatta soprattutto sul bianco pregiato che spesso si trova molto in profondit\u00e0, quindi dobbiamo optare per una tipologia di cane resistente al freddo, con il mantello chiaro, visibile nella notte e con un olfatto molto elevato. Inoltre, dobbiamo valutare se utilizzeremo il cane in modo professionale, quindi uscendo tutti i giorni o solo il week-end. Nel caso di utilizzo intenso andremo ad acquistare un cane adatto al lavoro, derivante da una linea di sangue \u201cda Lavoro\u201d e con struttura fisica che gli permetta di lavorare per diverse ore in tutte le situazioni.<\/p>\r\n

I cani a pelo raso tipo Pointer non sono adatti al nostro clima infatti con il freddo perdono diversi chilogrammi mostrando le costole e tendono a ritornare alla macchina durante il lavoro. Molto adatti sono gli incroci Bracco\/Pointer Springer\/Pointer, Drathaar\/Bracco, Drathaar\/pointer, tutte le razze da caccia incrociate. Potrebbero andar bene anche le razze da caccia pure ma spesso tendono ad avere un elevato istinto venatorio e quindi a cacciare molto. Secondo la mia esperienza la razza migliore che si adatta a tutte le situazioni \u00e8 il Lagotto Romagnolo, unico cane riconosciuto da tartufi dall\u2019ENCI. Il Lagotto \u00e8 adatto soprattutto ai principianti perch\u00e9 ha un\u2019intelligenza estrema, in pochi giorni di addestramento si riesce a fagli cavare i tartufi, non ha istinto venatorio e con il suo pelo folto non patisce il freddo anche se in primavera ed estate necessita di pi\u00f9 tosature, per non fargli patire il caldo e per le erbacce, forasacchi ecc. che si attaccano al mantello durante la ricerca. Per concludere con i cani da caccia ci va un certo polso, hanno bisogno di regole rigide, per questo li consiglio a tartufai esperti mentre il Lagotto \u00e8 consigliato a chiunque.<\/p>\r\n\"\"\r\n

Per addestrare un cucciolo alla ricerca del tartufo \u00e8 necessario far associare al cane l'attivit\u00e0 di ricerca a quella del gioco; in modo graduale e senza pretendere risultati immediati. Questa pratica va effettuata a piccoli passi, con pazienza cercando di ripetere i vari passaggi di seguito riportati fino a quando il cane non abbia appreso ogni singolo esercizio.<\/span><\/p>\r\n

Partendo dal presupposto che per il cane deve considerare il lavoro che ci apprestiamo a svolgere come un'attivit\u00e0 ludica, oltre a rimanere concentrato il pi\u00f9 possibile, andr\u00e0 seguito in modo costante. Gli esercizi dovranno avere durata breve, ci\u00f2 significa che ogni esercizio potr\u00e0 essere anche ripetuto varie volte durante la giornata, ma per poco tempo (da 5 a 15 minuti circa) perch\u00e9 essendo molto giovane i suoi livelli di attenzione\/concentrazione saranno limitati. Non dovremo insistere sul prolungamento di questi tempi, perch\u00e9 ritenendolo un gioco e stancandosi di praticarlo, se lo obbligassimo a continuare rischieremmo di ottenere l'effetto contrario...non avr\u00e0 pi\u00f9 piacere di ripeterlo.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"\r\n

Vedrete che giorno dopo giorno, il cane risponder\u00e0 sempre meglio ai comandi e all'esecuzione dei vari esercizi ed aumentare gradualmente i tempi per l'esercitazione. \u00c8 molto complicato indicare dei tempi per l'allenamento del cane, il livello di concentrazione del cucciolo dipendono dal carattere del cane ed anche da quanto \u00e8 bravo l'addestratore a coinvolgere il proprio cane nelle varie pratiche.<\/span><\/p>\r\n\"\"\r\n

La passione all\u2019addestramento mi accompagna da diversi anni, devo dire che ogni cane ha la sua particolarit\u00e0 e va preso diversamente da un altro, Il lagotto con molta dolcezza, se non ha una linea di sangue da tartufo o comunque da lavoro sar\u00e0 molto difficile farlo lavorare, infatti sto notando negli ultimi anni che tantissimi privati probabilmente per scopo di lucro fanno cucciolate senza badare a diversi fattori importanti, incrociando lagotti con displasia, con poca attitudine al lavoro e all\u2019apprendimento\u2026 questi saranno ottimi cani da compagnia ma pessimi cercatori di tartufo.\u00a0 <\/span>Da molti anni sto selezionando cani da lavoro, sia incroci caccia che Lagotti, devo dire che in media su una cucciolata di 7\/8 esemplari pi\u00f9 del 70% sono gi\u00e0 forti fin dai 3 mesi, lavorando con impegno, dedizione alla ricerca del tartufo e poche distrazioni. <\/span>Solitamente prima dell\u2019addestramento sottoponiamo il cane a semplici test, per capire se abbia delle attitudini alla ricerca. <\/span><\/p>\r\n

Con il primo test andremo ad indagare se al nostro cane piaccia il gusto del tartufo, poi proveremo a farci riportare uno straccetto con il profumo del tartufo, altro test importante \u00e8 valutare se il cane sia curioso, quindi attento a ci\u00f2 che facciamo\u2026 Se l\u2019animale fosse timido, pauroso, tenda a nascondersi, non mangi il tartufo, non sia interessato a noi e allo straccetto profumato, sar\u00e0 sicuramente un bravo cane ma da compagnia. <\/span>Non \u00e8 detto che questo tipo di cani non diventeranno mai cercatori ma sicuramente avranno bisogno prima dell\u2019addestramento al tartufo, di un lungo periodo di lavoro sul comportamento, rinforzando il loro carattere, portandoli a fidarsi dell\u2019uomo e a combattere le proprie paure.<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\r\n
